Overview
Chamberlain Group manufactures and provides smart access solutions for residential and commercial properties, including the myQ technology that enables remote control and monitoring of garage doors and other entry points via a mobile app.
How can Chamberlain Group control access and security beyond the garage and front door within the home?
Initial Research
We conducted a survey asking participants to rate the current and desired security levels of select access points in their home on a scale of 1 to 5. By subtracting the current security score from the desired security score, we identified the access point with the largest gap, highlighting the area most in need of improvement.
Establishing Our Focus
After identifying outdoor gates as the largest security gap, our team developed three personas to define key needs: family safety, access control, and flexible monitoring for large properties.
While our multi-disciplinary team developed a complete ecosystem as a whole, my primary focus was designing a seamless mobile app integrated with myQ to address these needs.

Setting a Temporary Code
An important priority for users who value access control was the implementation of a "temporary" gate code that could be shared for scheduled time periods for landscapers or friends/family who want to get in the outdoor gate.

Exclusive Subscription Features
Key features that we implemented for market value were the ability to monitor select "zones of preference" for surveillance footage around the outdoor gate. This way users will always know who is on their property, whether they have a code or not. This would be a premium feature that will incentivize users. Another feature that is exclusively for subscribers would be a video archive, where they could look through all existing footage.
